World-renowned choral group, The Sixteen, returns to Peterborough Cathedral on Friday 12th June with music from two masters of the Spanish golden age, Francisco Guerro and Alonso Lobo.

The concert is called Flight of Angels and hopes to transport audiences back to 16th century Seville, one of the biggest and most cosmopolitan cities on earth at that time.

“In the 16th century Spain was regarded as the most influential country in Europe, with the acquisition of vast new lands in the Americas, a plethora of universities and a wealth of great art and music,” says Harry Christophers, the concert’s Conductor. “Francisco Guerrero and Alonso Lobo were two of the most influential composers of the Renaissance, who spent their life in Spain, for many years in the service of Seville Cathedral.”

Unusually for a composer, Guerrero made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1558 and published a book about his journey. Lobo was a choirboy at Seville Cathedral when Guerrero was maestro de capella there. Both composers are famed for the emotional range and beauty of their music.

“Both Guerrero and Lobo’s works were performed in cathedrals throughout Spain, Portugal and the New World for nearly two centuries after their deaths. Let us ensure today that they can achieve the same renown,” says Harry Christophers.

Peterborough Cathedral is well known for its 16th century Spanish connection: Katharine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first wife and the daughter of Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain, was buried here in January 1536.

The concert starts at 7.30pm, with a pre-concert talk by Harry Christophers at 7.00pm. Tickets are £10 – £20 (booking fees apply) and are available from the Peterborough Vistor Information Centre on 01733 452336, or the national Box Office on 01904 651485, or via
